Win the award estimated $10,000 per artist – Manifest Gallery’ MAR Award

Manifest Gallery’ MAR Award

Deadline: 09.04.17 Fee: $50

Artists are invited to submit complete applications to Manifest’s  Manifest Artist Residency program (MAR).Applications will be reviewed on a competitive basis. One or two artists will be selected as the recipient(s) of the MAR award.

The program is open for application by any serious emerging or established artist, including recent graduates from college art programs. It will benefit Manifest’s community by providing public exposure to the often unseen working space and practices of artists, serving to eliminate some boundaries to contemporary artmaking which currently may divide the everyday public from the fine visual arts.

The program has proven to be an ideal transition between academic study and a professional career as a visual artist (or teaching artist), or between undergraduate and graduate study. MAR artists have gone on to win prestigious awards, grants, and exhibition exposure around the U.S. and beyond, and many have gained acceptance into graduate school or obtained teaching positions in academic institutions.

The MAR provides a studio free for a year, adjacent to Manifest Gallery, as well as a solo exhibition of works created during the year-long program. Other benefits include the option to develop and teach courses (for pay) at the Manifest Drawing Center, free access to the Drawing Center Darkroom, public exposure and dialog about in-studio works in progress, coordinated studio visits by key arts professionals in the Cincinnati region, participation in Manifest Gallery exhibition committee processes, and more.

The ideal candidate for the award of the program may be working in any media or genre, but would also make reasonable use of the available Manifest Drawing Center opportunities even if this is ancillary activity to their primary work. Suitability for teaching will be considered, but will not be a primary factor in the selection process, and a teaching appointment is not guaranteed. The priority of the MAR is to help artists develop their work and studio practice for future

Residency commences: July 1, 2017 (for a one year period)/.

The value of the award is estimated at approximately $10,000 per artist.

Each application must be accompanied by a $50 non-refundable submission fee.

Alternative Processes Competition

Winner:35-40 Selected images will hang in the SE Center’s main gallery space for approximately one month with the opportunity to be invited for a solo show at a later date Deadline:09.04.17 Fee: $35 for up to 5 Images, $6 for each additional image up to 10

The fine art nude has been a celebrated subject of photography since the beginning and played an important role in establishing photography as a fine art medium. Early on, both in history and most photographers experience, the nude has been featured in a classical pose and setting, maturing to illustrating the human body as a sculptural abstraction, and with some pushing boundaries.

With the 21st century flooding us, the photographer and the viewer, with images of the nude in every form of media, it has become more difficult for the fine art nude photographer to make a statement.  The SE Center is looking for photographers who can make a statement. Stop us in our tracks and make us see more in the image.

Juror Our juror for the Contemporary Nude is Mona Kuhn. Mona Kuhn was born in São Paulo, Brazil, in 1969, and in 1989, moved to the US and received her US Citizenship.  Kuhn earned her BA from The Ohio State University, before furthering her studies at the San Francisco Art Institute.  She is currently an independent scholar at The Getty Research Institute in Los Angeles.

Kuhn is best known for her large-scale, dream-like photographs of the human form. Her work often reference classical themes with a light and insightful touch.  Kuhn’s approach to her photography is unusual in that she usually develops close relationships with her subjects, resulting in images of remarkable naturalness and intimacy, and creating the effect of people naked but comfortable in their own skin.

Kuhn’s first monograph, Photographs, was debut by Steidl in 2004; immediately followed by Evidence (2007), Native (2010), Bordeaux Series (2011), and Private (2014).  Mona’s upcoming book is scheduled for Spring 2017 release.  The monographs are distributed by Steidl and DAP mainly in Europe, the US and Asia.

Exhibition Details 35-40 Selected images will hang in the SE Center’s main gallery space for approximately one month with the opportunity to be invited for a solo show at a later date. Participating artists that can attend have the opportunity for a Portfolio Review by SE Center Director Michael Pannier on the following Saturday morning (reservations needed).

Selected images must be matted and framed up to 20×24” to professional standards, white mat with simple black metal or wood frame unless prior approval has been obtained. The Center reserves the right to reject any piece not framed to our standards. To avoid shipping costs & headaches, the SE Center for Photography will print your photographs for you upon acceptance.
